Yes it is certainly possible (and easy) to squeeze this fix into an 11.10 update. I developed and tested the fix in 11.10 so it's only a matter of pushing the same fix into the 11.10 branches. The slowest part is the code review and approval, but that's not bad. I will try to do this soon. Please remind me if I forget.
I agree with your frustrations. From my observations of Ubuntu development in action, the tendency to abandon old releases while they're still supported on paper is just a matter of man-power. There aren't enough people to backport and test all fixes to all the releases that each bug affects.
