As another data point, I too am experiencing system freezes sporadically. Similar time spans to John. I find that switching to vc1 with Ctrl-Alt-F1, and then switching back to X thaws the freeze. When I switch back to X from vc1, the screen is black, but once I open the dash, parts of the screen are redrawn again and the computer becomes usuable.
This is a GTX 750 Ti. I am happy to provide any details.
