When performing package related operations I get a warning about an
invalid character in version number. For example:

$ dpkg -l compiz
dpkg-query: warning: parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 8322 package

I am running 16.04:
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:    Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
