code_swarm is an interesting visualization of the commit history of a
project. See http://vis.cs.ucdavis.edu/~ogawa/codeswarm/ for more info
and examples from other projects.

I've used that visualization on the history of the compose* project and
produced the videos listed below. Due to major reconstructing of the CVS
repository a couple of years back the results might not be 100%
correct.

There are two videos:

Requires XVid codec, ~38MB, best quality
http://r.elmuerte.com/~elmuerte/trese/composestar-history.avi

Requires Windows Media 9 codec, ~60MB, quality is a bet less
http://r.elmuerte.com/~elmuerte/trese/composestar-history.wmv

Every time a person commited a file his name will light up. The files
are represented as dots and fly towards the users that touched
them. Users and files will slowly fade out when there's no activity. In
the lower left part a histogram of the files is shown, the lower right
shows the date of the current image. Different file types have different
colors. Red is used for source code (.java, .cs, etc), green is used for
documents (this includes xml files which are also used for the build
configuration), libraries are purple (.jar and .dll), images are yellow,
files in the example directorys are light blue. All other files are
grey.

I haven't added comments to the movies yet for certain events. But here
are some pointers. In the beginning of september 2006 the project
swicthed to SVN and the StarLight project was started (till december
2006). Before that you might recognize the "integration weeks". From
june 2007 there's a long silent period until september (no active
developers).
