The SVCD format was developed by the China
National Technical Committee of Standards to bridge
the gap between the MPEG-1 based Video CD format
and DVD. The SVCD format delivers high-quality,
variable bit-rate MPEG-2 video on standard-density CD media.
SVCD (Super Video CD) makes use of VBR MPEG-2 to increase the
video quality, but playing time is reduced so that a movie will require
three discs not one.
SVCD was developed as the successor to VCD by the China National
Technical Committee of Standards. The VCD format is based on MPEG-1
video, while SVCD is based on the MPEG-2 standard. The primary
differences between SVCD and DVD include slightly lower video resolution,
CD-quality audio, and use of a CD rather than a DVD drive.

Philips has recently released the tentative specifications for this new version of
Video CD called SVCD. This format includes many of the features of DVD-Video
but without the long playing time.

Yang mbikin chip2 support SVCD ini diantaranya:
Winbond, Zoran, LSI Logic, Sigma Designs, ESS dan C-Cube.
SVCD Player sudah mulai banyak di taiwan, di kita juga..umm..
setahu gue mereknya Philips. Sejauh info yg gue dapet player2 SVCD
support format VCD3.0 , tetapi player VCD3.0 blm tentu support SVCD.
