EMang PIII it = PII + SIMD
JAdi kalo software elo gak support SIMD ya gak akan bisa dimanfaatkan
Baca Byte terbaru, PIII kalah telak lawan Apple G4, karena velocity engine
di G4 sudah dioptimize untuk SIMD
So kalau mesin Intel PIII mau saingi G4, kudu modifikasi OS dan ganti aplikasi.
The key to the G4 performance is the Velocity Engine, also known as AltiVec
technology. This was architected by Apple, Motorola, and IBM, but has been
driven and implemented by Motorola. The Velocity Engine is a 128-bit vector
execution unit, providing for highly parallel operations, while operating
concurrently with the existing integer and flops. A single instruction
performs operations in parallel on multiple data elements (SIMD). It can be
configured to process four 32-bit flops per machine cycle, or sixteen 8-bit
byte integer operations per cycle. For media oriented-operations, 162 other
instructions have been added each manipulating 128-bit-wide data paths.
Software applications must be changed to take advantage of the Velocity
Engine. This is not the first time the hardware architecture has required
software change. When AV Macs were introduced with DSPs, when the Quadras
transitioned to PowerMacs, and when multi-processor Macs were introduced,
software had to be revised to fully exploit the hardware capabilities.
