Also the price of standard SDRAM memory has almost doubled in the past
week, this has been caused by the actual SDRAM chips that make the
module increasing in price, 64-Mbit chips are selling for US$14, when
they were previously selling for $8, and hitting a low price of $6.70.
To make a 64MB DIMM, you need 8 of the 64-Mbit chips, 9 for parity. The
rise in prices is attributed to several conditions, such as: the move to
64MB instead of 32MB as the minimum memory configuration, a shortage of
memory due to a power grid outage in Taiwan, a dead spot in the
transition between 64Mbit chips and 128Mbit chips, an increase in PC
sales, especially with free PC incentives. In any case, memory
manufacturers are guessing that the transition to 128Mbit chips will
alleviate the problem, and that the upturn in pricing is mostly based on
fear.
