SUMMARY

The SmartDownload feature in Netscape's Navigator (included as an option
since version 4.7) logs user downloads and sends this data back to
Netscape. This data includes the file name, the file server's name and the
user's IP address. It may also include the user's email address. A cookie
pointing to this information is also added to the browser. This is all
done without informing the user or asking his/her permission. This
information is also sent out when Netscape's Search option is used.

DETAILS

A privacy problem exist in Netscape's SmartDownload product (and in its
internal search engine option), whenever they are used Netscape gets
informed. The information travels through the internet to
cgi.netscape.com, in form of files that contain detailed information about
the user's behavior. These files, if carefully pieced together, can be
used to build pretty good profile of Navigator users - interests, favorite
sites, probable age, income, etc.
