Rambus Ties Intel's Hands Behind Back
Maximum PC
A pact signed with Rambus in 1997 has Intel screaming because of two
obscure clauses in the agreement. Under the clauses, Intel can't develop a
chipset supporting DDR and must focus on DRDRAM until 2003.
This devilish pact from the last decade explains why Intel previously had a
one-track mind when it came to memory interfaces. But this hasn't stopped
Intel from signing licensing deals with Via Technologies, and Silicon
Integrated Systems (SIS), two former chipset enemies, to allow the
companies to make DDR-enabled chipsets for Pentium IIIs and Celerons.
Another clause limits Intel from supporting any DRAM interface which
exceeds a bandwidth of 1GB/sec, which also means Intel can't develop its
own DRAM interface. However, the pact with Rambus doesn't limit Intel from
evolving its current chipsets to the existing main memory interfaces. This
is why the 815 chipset was released and supports 133MHz SDRAM -- just
evolution here, no DDR, no Intel-based memory, just evolution.
Intel's Willamette processor has been criticized for only working on the
Rambus-enabled Tehama chipset, but another independent core-logic chipset
maker, ServerWorks, will make DDR chipsets for Intel's Foster and McKinley
server processors. Though, it's not clear if this is a violation of the
pact with Rambus.

Mudah-mudahan VIA dapat mengotimize chipset untuk Pentium 2/3/Celeron
sedemikian rupa menggantikan Intel BX chipset. Tahun 2003 masih lama euy
... entah udah ada processor apa waktu itu nanti.
