"And the Winner Is...
...the Canon PowerShot G1. Having carefully considered the final choice, we
can only say that the closest contender to the Canon PowerShot G1 was the
Nikon Coolpix 990. Though the Nikon digital camera excelled with its amount
of features (histogram function, multi-zone auto-focus), we don't see
prosumers and amateur photographers using them excessively as they require
some practice. It may also have the best flash range (contrary to what the
spec comparisons say) and rich color reproduction, but it pales in
comparison to the PowerShot G1 in several areas.
First, despite the Nikon Coolpix's swivel-lens design, the Canon PowerShot
G1's rotating LCD display seems more appealing (it also has a more
pocket-friendly body design). The Canon PowerShot G1 comes with a flash
hot-shoe (the Nikon Coolpix only supports a flash sync socket), a Type-II CF
slot (so you can use it with the IBM Microdrive for higher capacity shots)
and supports up to 5 RAW TIFF 2048 x 1536 pictures (while the Nikon and
Olympus takes only 1). Another thing to consider is that the Canon PowerShot
G1 uses rechargeable Li-Ion while the Nikon Coolpix relies on four AA-size
batteries.
If you compare the images we've taken among the Canon, Nikon and Olympus,
the Canon PowerShot G1 seems to have better tone and richness in color.
Human skin details are extremely well captured (Auto and Daylight) while
colors appear in their natural state. Though there are some parts that are
too bright (especially white colors), the rest of the details are
accentuated to preserve a high level of detail.
One last factor that tipped the balance is the Canon PowerShot G1's pricing.
As it costs only S$1,599 (nearly S$200 below the Nikon Coolpix 990), this
makes it an overall winner (albeit barely), especially when targeted at
prosumers and amateur photographers."
