Happened to me when I was out of the country and unable to get online to
update my credit card details with my hosting company. Very very annoying. Got
the domain back after 18 months. Just leave it, and do a check on availability
through some (reputable) domain re-seller every couple of months.
Didn't know about the German residency requirements. Doesn't anyone in
Germany offer a "parking address" service for people like yourself? After all,
your typical WHOIS record contains an administrative contact, a technical
contact and a billing contact, and I'd guess that only one of them (admin?)
needs to be in Germany.
Oh dear, someone has been fscking with DNS. Trying to look up the WHOIS
records for microsoft.com I get :
