Your neighbor could likely save himself money by taking the laptop to a
decent repair shop and tell them he can't connect to the web. A good shop will be able to connect his laptop to a test network and see if there is a problem with his network adapter or with his network configuration. If it is an adapter problem a new PC Card network adapter costs less than $100 dollars and probably less than $150 installed and configured. If it is a problem with his configuration it will probably cost less than $200 dollars for a technician to fix the problem.

In either case the cost will be less than the $700-800 for a new computer and he won't have to deal with the problems of moving data and applications from the old computer to the new computer.

Thanks Howard.

I suggested that at the outset but I think he really wants a new computer. As you noted, he mainly uses the computer for email, Quicken, some photo manipulation (moving from camera to computer to Snapfish) and he does like to watch DVDs on his computer. So he needs something fast enough to accommodate that but not a gaming machine or anything near that.

All suggestions sinceraly appreciated.

Best, Gail
