A "good or bad idea" depends upon which side of the card you are on,
so to speak. An RFID chip can have many applications. It can be
employed to track your movements, using an exciter at various
locations to power up the RFID chip causing it to transmit the
personal data contained therein. This information can then be sold
to interested parties, letting them know where you go, at what times
you go to these locations, and what you buy if you use the RFID
chipped card to make your purchases. It can even be used to reveal
what areas of a given store you have browsed in, including being able
to inform interested parties if you picked up and examined a display
sample.

RFIDs have an established use in tracking shipped merchandise as
well. The range of the transmitters within the chip are currently
limited, usually topping out a few yards, with most being but a few
feet at most.

I think you can microwave your chip bearing card, thereby rendering
it unable to be used as a tracking device.

Drilling a hole through the chip works too. Hammers don't always work. A microwave will melt the card, too.

A friend [who drilled the hole through his card] says that his remote for his car didn't work unless he put the blink card some distance from the car. After he disabled it, the remote worked OK.

Is there a way to cover it so that it only works exactly when the owner wants it to work and not by accident [like [passports with chips]. Aluminum foil? Aluminum coated mylar? Matte knife through the antenna?
