Subject: Background programs running

One thing I've noticed on my computer is that a lot of programs are running in the background, some of which do not need to be running.

Question...can you direct me to a good source so I can figure out what some of these things are and put an end to the things that do not need to run? Is there a good program (inexpensive or free) that can make the adjustments and close down those things which do not need to be running?

I do a lot of graphics work and that can bog down the computer by itself...does not need the help of those additional useless programs.

Thank you.

Jeff

If you are using Windows then I highly recommend the site

http://www.blackviper.com/

He has a listing (that you can download) of each of the different options in Windows xp and Microsoft vista that are process's and the options to turn on and off to speed up your computer.

If you are not using windows, then the most revered exalted high muck raker will have to tell you how to do it.
