Point made and taken. That was indeed not an entirely fair comment. 

Thanks for your synopsis as well. I think I am pretty much persuaded by the 
responses that I shall just stick to XP for now.

The people who responded to you did a fine job - no one really knows of
anything important or useful that distinguishes Vista from XP.  For some
people, Vista will work better for them - most of them are people without
much legacy software to move over - they can buy a new machine and not add
any software but what comes with it.  I tried it pretty heavily for 30 days,
then dumped it.  For me, it was too much extra work keeping things running,
with little benefit.
