What happens if you get "air into the syste", how can you tell, and what can you do about it? I always run my cartridges until the printer won't print any more without a new one, which is usually 10 to 20 pages after I get a warning about the ink being low?
Air being in the system at the point where the jets expel the ink onto the material being printed upon can cause jets to clog due to drying of the ink. This is an issue with printers that have the printhead as separate from the ink supply cartridge. Clogged jets will cause incomplete dispersal of the ink, typically resulting in thin white lines or streaks or even narrow bands of discoloration appearing in the image that has been printed.
This condition can usually be rectified by replacing the cartridge that has caused the problem and running some cleaning cycles if the dried ink in the jet(s) has not become too hardened by the drying process. When that happens, it may be necessary to soak the printhead in a bath of water and/or glycol, or even to inject such a solution directly into the printhead in order to soften the clog and cause it to return to a liquid state.
