My biggest complaint about MS Windows Defender is that it is a resource
hog. Unless you have gobs of RAM, it is going to slow things down.
I also use a variety of spyware filters, including one called
"SuperAntispareware" that seems very good. I have not been infected in
many, many years.

I typically run Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft's Ad aware, MS's
Defender, Stopzilla and Eeye's Blink. They all catch different things
and don't seem to interfere with each other. Stopzilla, MS, and
Blink are running all of time.
Blink is free for a year and the most troublesome since it is the most
sensitive. It is designed to find things that act like a
virus/spyware as well as things it has signatures for. It is also the
program I would put on a machine for some one who knows nothing about
computer security.
Stopzilla blocks pop ups and spyware.
My next step is to setup Astaro's Free Security gateway software on an
old PC box to protect our home network.
