Install a new drive.  

Put the OS on it.

Plug the old drive in as the slave.

Copy as much as possible from old to new.  

I have never been able to get that system restore thing to work.  there is 
usually damage to the HD somewhere in the boot/important sector/s.

I presumes you do not have a mirror drive.
