I bought mine from a vendor who had factory refurbished ones (before Minolta/Konica melted into Sony). I see several up on eBay in your range. There is quite a difference between the model 5400 and the 5400II inasmuch as the former is incandescently lit, has usb&firewire, and has 3 corrections schemes while the latter has fluorescent lighting, has usb, has 4 correction schemes, and a less touchy transport scheme. Mine is the model II. Both are likely good. The Nikon product does not scan Kodachrome emulsion well while the KM5400&5400II both do a good job on that commonly used film.

I was recommending it to a patron, but can't find it anywhere. Is it not being produced, & if not, can someone recommend a similar 35mm scanner? I've never used the Nikon Coolscans, but they seem to be the most prevalent. I'm looking in the $400-$600 range. tia. david David Turk Manager, Preservation Imaging Services Indiana Historical Society Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center 450 W.
