Yes Broadcast are compressing their digital signals but the cable/satellite people are recompressing that compressed digital signal a few times more to get the bandwidth down. Try comparing a cable/satellite signal on a digital tv to the same station on an outdoor antenna or simple rabbit ears. You get more artifacts on the second hand digital source.
