Just to clarify:
Are you saying you think I could just buy a Tivo unit and never go on
line with it or pay for their service, and just program it by start time
and duration? Or something like that?

You can do that. I have done that for programs that were not listed
correctly by the programming service. This happens in times of special
programming, like Olympics or political conventions. But it is so much
easier to use the program grid. The Tivo also applies some intelligence
when programmed via the grid. (I have not yet worked out the logic of
what it does, but it does not literally follow the program grid.)
