I'm using 100, but the problem is not the downstream switch... it's that it's all connected through one ethernet cable to the gigaswitch in the closet, and it's a LOT for one port of even a gigaswitch.

Are you using a 10MBps or 100MBps, and would the problem go away using giga switches?

I have a number of unmanaged switches around our offices for a number of reasons and the only problems we've ever had are when we have overload due to someone deciding to run three computers in each cubicle... that can drag your badwidth a touch.

I don't know how that would work with VoIP.

We are moving our office location, and we will be building out a new space. I am trying to find out if it is

1) better to run as many CAT5e/6 wires to the individual rooms plus any extras for the future,

or

2) run one CAT5e/6 to each room and put an unmanaged switch in each room for the number of devices required.(4,6,8Port)

They have four-port switches you can put in the wall, or even an external unit is fine, although less aesthetically pleasing. Running individual runs to the areas can get extremely expensive, since one run can be $100. Will I have a problem with 13 unmanaged switches in my network bringing it to a crawl?

I plan to also have a wireless setup but I like to use wired also as my security blanket.

Considering that we may run Voip and computers in each of the 13 areas the cost savings of using $15 4Port switches are very big. Am I missing something that will make me regret going with unmanaged switches

Mike
