"Torrent" is a process for "defeating" the normal throttling (individual bandwidth) of the Internet by downloading [large] files in several (more than one) parallel streams, each individual stream being normally throttled, but the resulting composite stream being Nx faster than a single stream. BitTorrent (spelling?) is a particular implementation.
