You want to use media with two important criteria: 1-universal/standard codec; 2-fast loading
For universal codecs, choose MPEG4 or Flash/Shockwave, or both. There are other choices, but you'll want a codec that all visitors can view, not just some.
Be sure the video is as small as possible but still viewable. Video programs can export web video. Some web sites have that service too.
