Get here a combo FireWire/USB drive enclosure and put whatever HD you want inside. Enclosures start at around $25. Don't rely on just USB. If you want to use it for backup with TimeMachine, I think it has to be formatted as a Mac drive [Disk Utility].

I have one of mine formatted FAT32 to use with Macs and PCs, and it works fine. The one formatted NTFS needs special utilities to be used with Macs. Unless you have individual files larger than 4GB and you share with a new PC, NTFS isn't worth the hassle.
