Make sure you have backed all your personal files up on an ext drive

the front panel switch is simply a momentary contact switch that
signals the motherboard to power up/down. It's only function either
works or doesn't - it's not like it may be losing contact during boot.
A better first wild guess would be a sticky hard drive. With the case
open, you should be able to hear when it spins up. Try smacking it
with a screwdriver during boot and listen.
