Okay, I got my Family Pack (2 DVDs, 32 bit and 64 bit, one Product ID). Went to install it on a new hard drive and setup reached the point of asking me for the Product ID. I typed it.
In a flyout I got: "The product key is not valid" "Please retype the product key". It seemed to already have locked on the caps lock, and it was adding my dashes for me. But I dutifully tried to retype it several times before giving up and calling MS. In a call that must have lasted an hour all told, I eventually got the word to just leave that space blank and activate later, after install. That worked.
