That's a hard one. If Cheney were still running the show I'm sure we would be blockading Madagascar until they turned over their IPs to US. With the current namby-pamby administration I don't know.
Somebody ought to be looking at assigned, but unused IPs. I commonly see ISPs providing customers with multiple static IPs when they really need only one or would do fine with a dynamic IP. I won't believe that there is really a shortage until I see an annual fee assessed per IP address where people get a real bill that lists their IPs and the charge. What is essentially free tends to get wasted.
Does anybody know what the hold-up is with IPv6? Did they over engineer it or is that task of switching over more work than the community will bear?
