Hi - I have a tech guru who wired my house who suggests dumping McAfee (even before last week's difficulty) and use Microtrend instead <www.trendmicro.com> Have any of you used this successfully? Is there something else you'd recommend?

There are dozens of anti-virus programs for the PC and the difference between most of them is slight. The differences are also ever changing as upgrades add or subtract features and annoyances.

I was recently looking at anti-virus options for a client. I looked at both McAfee and Trend (among others) and saw very little difference between them. Technically I like Bit Defender the best, but their USA support operation is horrible. It is so bad that I won't use the product. Some products have owners who poorly maintain their software and then go in for major rewrites when sales drop too low. An example of this is Norton, whose last update made the software good again. Some people insist on only using free software, even though virus definitions are not delivered as quickly. M$ offers a free product that ain't bad.

So anybody who suggests dumping one anti-virus program for another should be telling you exactly why. Their reasons may not impress you. I would not bother swapping McAfee and Trend. There just isn't enough difference to matter.

If you really cared about anti-virus you would not be using a virus- prone OS. Get a Mac and stop fretting.
