Milan is not a dangerous city, and the Central Railway Station is not a dangerous spot (it has just undergone a thorough restoration, and there are shops and restaurants open until late).
On the other hand, Milan is a large city at the center of the largest metropolitan area in Italy, and like any other large city in the world it attracts pickpockets. Therefore, avoid showing Rolex watches and big gold chains in public (you can show them at the conference...), and do not leave your bag or backpack unzipped while you are in crowded places, and in the underground. At night (between midnight and 5AM) avoid walking alone in dark streets in the suburbs... but this applies to any other large city worldwide. Please do not be scared. Italians are nice people, although they do not speak foreign languages (even young people), so asking information in English might be a challenge (but I shared all the instructions). Enjoy the conference. We have tried to create the right environment for a productive meeting, and we still have places available for hackatons (there will be food and drinks).
