Dear Conkerors
So, I was about to write to request help with a little problem (flash
plugin stops working after some time and I have to start conkeror afresh)
when it occurred to me that perhaps it would be best to git up to the
newest versions. So I did and now I have a big problem instead.
Having run the installation as root, I get the following behavior when
running under my account:
/usr/local/src/conkeror/conkeror
Error initializing.

Further, when I run conkeror as root, I get no sound and instead I get
zillions of instances of the message
ALSA lib ../../../src/pcm/pcm_dmix.c:1008:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open
slave
