No problem here, with Conkeror 1.0pre and XULRunner 8.0.  I don't believe
that &nbsp; could be deprecated, either, because non-breaking whitespace
is an essential character.  (Perhaps you heard that particular uses of it
were deprecated (one sees it abused by wysiwyg editors) but surely not the
entity itself.)  Try a newer version of conkeror and a different version
of XULRunner, and if those don't do it, try another profile.
