I follow up to my own post as experimenting around gives that AdBlock works well to kill these banners and solve the problem. In doing this, I had to resort to AdBlock Plus 1.3.10 as with AdBlock 2 I couldn't access the filter settings. I tried to work around by going to the filter list website directly as suggested in another post, but didn't succeed with this method either to set up the filters.
