I should clarify this point.  The input box displays a text cursor which
will occupy a certain width when it is at the end of the input; for me
it is a bar one pixel wide.  However, when the text is copied to the
strut, the strut width does not inlude an allowance for the cursor.  If
the cursor is not allowed for in some way then, when the initial input
box width is filled, the input text will shift to the left by the cursor
width.  Right padding the strut not only "ensures enough visual space
for the insertion point", but literally allows room for the cursor to be
drawn.
