I’m a student in cons/rest of ceramics and glass at “La Cambre” in
Brussels, Belgium, currently writing a thesis about “The conservation and
restoration of hybrid ceramics”.

According to my research, hybrid ceramics are objects composed with ceramic
fragments from different sources. These fragments can come from different
original vessels or they could have been made later to fill the losses in a
piece, imitating the aspect of the “original”.

They are known in the literature under different names, such as: alien
fragments, substitution fragments, manufactured fragments, molded fragments
modern fragments, pastiche, recycled fragments, fac-similé, etc…

That problematic is often treated as secondary and information is quite
hard to find using usual research networks.

Any type of documentation you could provide towards that phenomenon is
welcome, also literature about individuals and manufactures who practiced
that kind of repair.

I know you are busy and I really appreciate you red that request. I believe
any of your contribution can be significant in my work. It is a great
opportunity to exchange and learn about the deontology and history of our
profession.

Sincerely yours,

Annie Gilbert
