We are currently conducting a study for potential energy efficiency improvement
works and are investigating alternatives to carbon filters that may have lower
resistance while maintaining acceptable levels of air quality. We are
questioning whether carbon filters are still recommended.

The old British Standard, BS5454:2000 stated (7.5.3) 'Where local monitoring
suggests that the fresh air taken into the repository contains sulphur dioxide
and/or oxides of nitrogen in excess of 10 micrograms per m3, the air should
pass through an activated carbon or alumina filter to reduce these pollutants
to below this concentration'.

However PD5454:2012 which replaced it does not contain the same stipulation.

I do not know if the new draft standard BS 4971 has anything to say on the
matter, as the draft is no longer available on the BSI website.
We would welcome anyone's experience or views on this please.

Kind regards
