I am a conservator at the John Rylands Library. The library has a large
parchment map it is 2.6m wide x 1.3m high, according to catalogue records it
was created in 1546.

The map is tightly rolled and stored in a damaged wooden box. The map is
attached along its two long sides to two wooden poles.

My colleague and I have been tasked with re-housing the map. We have had a
quote for a bespoke case for the map from a conservation supplier, and we are
considering ways to support the roll inside the box.

We are thinking of making the map a supportive roll using polyester wadding
sandwiched between two layers of Tyvek as this will provide a smooth material
to sit against the painted parchment surface while providing a light weight
support for the cockled substrate.

It would be great to have ideas and thoughts from conservators who have
re-housed similar objects.

Many thanks
