Project Conservator: Past Caring? City of York Health and Poor Law Archives
Full time, 18 months: £28, 062 pa (temporary, fixed) Starting March 2017 The Past Caring? project - funded by Wellcome - will catalogue and conserve 160 linear metres of health, poverty and social care archives. Dating between 1837 and 2003, these collections have rich potential for academic researchers, community historians and local people but are currently in a state of complex physical deterioration. As Project Conservator you will plan and carry out preservation and conservation work to make them fully accessible for the first time. Working together with a Project Archivist and teams of volunteers, you will assess, clean, repair and repackage the records of York Poor Law Union and Workhouse, Medical Officer of Health and the Departments of Health and Environmental Health. You will tackle the challenge of treating large series of volumes with red-rot as well as paper affected by iron gall ink. You will work both in-situ at the archive store, establishing a pop-up workbench, and at the Borthwick Institute conservation studio at the University of York. In addition to a recognised qualification in conservation, you will have experience of working specifically with paper and bindings. You will have excellent organisational and time management skills, as well as a demonstrable ability to work independently. Experience of working collaboratively with professional or specialist peers, who may have different or competing priorities, is highly desirable. Experience of planning and managing conservation projects and budgets will be beneficial.
