Subject: [Consdistlist] Non Adhesive Labels

...Has anyone heard of or use non-adhesive methods to label their books?...

Hello Rebecca,

There are a couple different ways I've used. One is to take a strip of
Mylar about 3cm wide (doesn't really matter as long as it's wide enough for
your label to fit on it) and long enough to go completely around the entirety
of the front cover of the book from top to bottom with a bit of overlap on the
ends of the Mylar strip. Place your adhesive label on the Mylar strip and wrap
the Mylar around the front cover from top to bottom. Place a piece of double
sided tape between the overlapping ends of the Mylar strip, making sure that
the tape doesn't extend past the edged of the Mylar. You have to make sure the
Mylar is tight enough to not fall off but not so tight as to damage the cover.
Of the two examples here this takes a bit longer to do.

Another is to use a piece of acid-free card, label the appropriate
information on the top of the card and place it in the book like a bookmark.
You can make these yourself or buy them from heritage suppliers pre-cut. The
cards can also have a tab cut into them so they fit over a page or pages to
help keep them in place but this depends on the volume being worked with. If a
tab is used it could potentially damage the pages it's placed on and the card
as a whole could potentially leave an imprint on the surrounding pages, with or
without a tab. This option is a bit faster than the Mylar option but more
likely for the cards to become dissociated than the Mylar strips.

Since these are for modern books and based on the activities of the
Wellcome Trust, I'm guessing this is for a working library. In that case there
may be less of a concern regarding longevity of the volumes so your concerns
may be different than most here. Both these methods work well for 'non-working'
libraries where a single staff member or only a few staff members are accessing
the collection since the labels can become dissociated but that will all depend
on your needs.
