The focus is on Japanese leather and the traditional tanning methods employed to produce ‘white’ leather: oil, brain, smoke and alum.
There will be two speakers from Japan - Yuko Nishimura a social anthropologist looking at the social standing of tanners, and Shoji Nobi a tanner and historian - who will be discussing the production of white leather at the leather making centre of Himeji. The programme will also cover subjects such as the decorated leather on Japanese arms and armour, the history of braining tanning in the Americas and the chemistry behind these traditional tanning methods. The cost of the day to include a buffet lunch will be 35 pounds sterling for ALG members and 50 pounds sterling for non-members. The booking deadline is Monday 21st August 2017.
