2017 Western Association for Art Conservation (WAAC) Annual Meeting Registration is now open for the 2017 WAAC Annual Meeting, 26-28 September 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
On Monday 25 September, there will be a Pre-Conference session: “The History of Rare Books.” The session will be hosted by WAAC President Randy Silverman in the Special Collections at Brigham Young University’s Library in Provo. Participants will tour though the state-of-the-art vaults and see the collection’s strength in Renaissance printed books, followed by a hands-on examination of collection materials ranging from cuneiform tablets though the epitome of 19th century chromolithography. Selected Medieval, Renaissance and later books and bindings will be examined and discussed. William Minter will be on hand to offer his insights as well. The BYU Library represents the finest rare book collection between Chicago, Austin and Los Angeles, so this is a rare opportunity. Registration is free but space is limited and filling up very quickly so please register soon. The general sessions at the meeting will be held Tuesday morning through Thursday noon and include the normal, fabulous mix of papers. The reception at the Natural History Museum of Utah on Wednesday includes a buffet, deserts and bar plus a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum’s collections. Some of this year’s presentations: three papers on CO2/dry-ice cleaning (including an in-person demonstration of soot removal from a bound book); treatment of the University of Utah’s 19th century oversized Malby Globes; two treatments of oversized works on paper; paintings conservation above the arctic circle and the treatment of the Alaska Treaty of Cession; Kintsugi ceramic repairs; reshaping 700-year old leather moccasins; treating a painting coated with zinc soap; tips; and more. A few slots remain in the program so if you are inspired to present a paper please contact me at <randy.silver...@utah.edu>. Accommodations at the conference hotel are quite reasonable at $109 per night (for one or two people), and the University Guest House is accessible via light rail from the Salt Lake International Airport. Registration: 888-416-4075 (please mention WAAC to receive the conference rate).
