CONSERVATOR (EXHIBITS AND LOANS)

GS 11-12 ($66,510- $103,639)

Summary

This position is located in the Preservation Services department at the 
National Museum of American History (NMAH), Smithsonian Institution (SI). 
Preservation Services supports long-term collections preservation and access by 
managing programs in conservation treatment, documentation, and research; 
providing preservation training and guidance on collections care and partnering 
with the Office of Facilities Engineering and Operations (OFEO) to monitor 
environmental conditions, and managing collections disaster response. The work 
of this position relates to the organization, coordination, and conservation 
activities related to NMAH exhibits and loans.



Major Duties

Serves as the conservation coordinator among the conservation laboratories to 
support exhibit projects and loan processes, under the general guidance of the 
Preservation Services Manager. Reviews and provides feedback on 
conservation-related aspects of exhibit and loan plans. Develops conservation 
standards and guidelines for exhibits. Develops conservation plans and 
schedules for the projects, and tracks the conservation work against the 
overarching project plans and schedules to ensure that they are synchronized 
with each other. Develops standards and guidelines for loan requests and 
supports and monitors their implementation. Serves on cross-functional project 
teams, working collaboratively with other team members and presenting 
conservation information and updates to help move project work forward.



Works with OCA staff to develop policies and procedures for environmental 
monitoring of exhibits and storage areas. Reviews environmental reports and 
recommends any actions as necessary. Develops standards and guidelines for 
beneficial temperature, relative humidity, and light levels for displaying and 
storing museum collections. Advises and trains OCA staff in monitoring display 
and storage conditions. Advises on the appropriateness of exhibit display 
materials and storage options.



Collaborates with Smithsonian Facilities, NMAH, OCA and National Collections 
Program (NCP) staff to develop and implement emergency plans; coordinates 
training of OCA staff on emergency responses.



Conducts object-level condition surveys, collections-level assessments, and 
detailed object examinations to determine object condition and treatment needs. 
Develops conservation treatment proposals, recommends treatments, and obtains 
curatorial approval on recommended treatments. Performs approved conservation 
treatments. Documents conservation work as warranted. Participates in 
laboratory maintenance. Complies with the American Institute for Code of Ethics 
and Conservation Guidelines for Practice.
