Conservation of Photographs on Glass Symposium and Workshop

Location: Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), Toronto, Canada

Date: 10-12 October 2018

Instructors: Katharine Whitman, Conservator of Photographs, Art Gallery of
Ontario and Greg Hill, Senior Conservator of Archival Materials and
Photographs, Canadian Conservation Institute.

Workshop Description:

The symposium will feature a day of lectures for photograph conservators
and care-takers alike: the lectures will cover the history of photographs
on glass and the history of glass, as it relates to photography. Speakers
on this day will be Katharine Whitman, Stephen Koob, head of glass
conservation at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, and
Sophie Hackett, curator of photographs at the AGO. There will also be an
expert panel discussion including Lisa Ellis, Sophie Hackett, Stephen Koob
and Katharine Whitman on glass and photographs in the AGO collection.

The two day workshop will provide training to conservators of photographs
(10 max). The workshop will cover the deterioration and conservation of
glass supported photographs, including reassembly of broken glass
components and the current best practices for preservation and
conservation. The workshop will be led by principal instructor, Katharine
Whitman, one of the leading experts in the conservation of photographic
materials containing glass. Greg Hill, senior conservator of archival
materials and photographs at the Canadian Conservation Institute will be
the co-instructor for this course. The hands-on practicum sessions,
lectures, presentations, and discussions of the workshop will be
comfortably accommodated in the AGO conservation studio and a lecture
room. Selections from the collection of glass-based photographs and
photographs with glass at the AGO will provide examples to illustrate the
course curriculum.

The workshop will begin with comprehensive overviews of the use of glass in
photography, its technology, mechanisms of deterioration, and diagnosis and
documentation of condition. Processes to be covered will include both
photographs with glass supports and photographs with associated integral
glass components:

- Negatives (wet collodion, albumen, gelatin dry plate)

- Ambrotype

- Autochrome

- Lantern slide

- Opaltype

- Daguerreotype cover-glass

- Passepartout glass

This will be followed by presentations on best practice for treatment,
storage, handling, and display. Hands-on practicum sessions with mock
glass objects will provide experience with conservation treatments such as
cleaning, consolidation, and various methods of stabilization of broken
photographs.
