Via Angelo Masina 5b 00153 Rome – Italy Deadline for registration: 31st of March, 2018 Masterclass fee includes two lunches at the AAR and a course binder: 450,00 euro This two-day masterclass course on the Identification and Care of Photographic Negatives will be held by Monique Fischer at the Photographic Archive of the American Academy in Rome (AAR). It offers an in-depth introduction to the preservation of negatives, focusing particularly on their identification, deterioration, and care. The participants will have the exceptional opportunity to examine several examples of 19th and early 20th century negatives selected by photograph conservator Sandra M. Petrillo from the important and valuable Photographic Archive of the AAR (in particular from the Parker, Askew, Moscioni and Van Deman collections). After a brief introduction by Lavina Ciuffa on the specialized collection of art, archaeology and architecture photography conserved in this archive, attendees will learn how to recognize various historic photographic techniques and formats and will study the preservation problems associated with each one. The masterclass will also discuss storage concerns and preservation priorities, including environmental guidelines and proper care and handling.
Monique Fischer received a B.A. in Chemistry from Smith College and a M.S. in Art Conservation with a concentration in Photographic Materials from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program. She is currently the senior photograph conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover and is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC). In collaboration with the Image Permanence Institute (IPI), she was awarded a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1997 for the development of A-D Strips. Monique lectures extensively on photograph conservation in the United States and abroad. She has been awarded two fellowships by the J. Paul Getty Trust to investigate the longevity of digital output media. Organizer: Sandra M. Petrillo, Owner of the SMP International Photo Conservation Studio Sandra M. Petrillo was awarded an MA in Art History from the University of Rome and she obtained an MA in Art Conservation, with a specialization in Photography, from the Institut National du Patrimoine (INP) of Paris. Since 1996 she has worked as a professional conservator in private practice in France, Luxembourg and the USA. Her company the SMP Studio, established in 2009, is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of historic and fine art photographs. From 2012 to 2015 she was the Italian partner in the Daguerreobase Project and the editor of the online publication “Daguerreotype Journal”. Sandra is currently teaching photography conservation at ICRPAL, Scuola di Alta Formazione, in Rome. She also organizes masterclasses in her studio which deal with history, technology and identification and care of photographic materials.
