The Portland Art Museum invites applications for the position of temporary
Conservation Technician within our Conservation department. The
Conservation Technician assists the Conservator to restore, maintain, or
prepare objects in the Museum collections for storage, research, or
exhibit. The current assignment is to assist the Conservator on a
short-term project treating silver artwork. The project includes all
aspects of treatment, from examination and documentation to the application
of a protective coating to the silver and subsequent assessment of the

of 170 budgeted hours.

*RESPONSIBILITIES*
------------------------------

·         Examine artwork using magnification, specular, raking, and
ultraviolet light. Document artwork conditions in prose and use established
department condition report templates.

·         Clean silver using known and established conservation methods and
techniques including the use of equipment and materials, such as an air
compressor, industrial steam cleaner, organic solvents, and water
filtration system.

·         Apply protective coating(s) with HVLP sprayer or by brush as
appropriate and assess with ultraviolet light to ensure adequate coverage.

·         Apply accession number labels to artwork during coating process.

·         Coordinate photo-documentation, deinstallation, and
transportation of artwork with Collections Photographer, Conservator, and
Collections Manager.

·         Pack artwork for transport between the Museum and off-site
storage location.

·         Use scientific lab equipment, such as a scale and graduated
cylinder, chemicals, and organic solvents and dispose of hazardous waste
appropriately.

·         Perform routine tasks such as washing laboratory dishes, putting
supplies and equipment away, and cleaning counters and work benches.

·         May assist Collections staff in transport of artwork between the
Museum and off-site storage and coordinate transit.

·         May be involved in environmental monitoring, pest management,
packing of artwork, collection housing, housekeeping or gallery
maintenance, and emergency preparedness and disaster recovery.

·         May carry out photo-documentation as needed.

*QUALIFICATIONS*
------------------------------

·         One to three years related education, training, and/or experience.

·         Read and interpret documents such as conservation documentation,
safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, safety data sheets
(SDS) and procedure manuals.

·         Use Microsoft Office to write and prepare routine reports and
correspondence.

·         Problem solve, collect data, and document information.

·         Knowledge of safe art handling practices and principles of
professional museum collection care and respect for works of art.

·         Make responsible judgements about workplace safety using
knowledge about scientific lab safety and waste disposal, and art studio
maintenance.

·         Effectively communicate verbally and maintain effective working
relationship with supervisor, staff, and other co-workers by contributing
to a positive organizational culture based on mutual respect, collegiality,
collaboration and openness to many perspectives.

·         Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management methods, Gallery
Maintenance, and Environmental Monitoring desired, but not required

·         Climb ladders, lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of
time with occasional outdoor work.
