Textile Conservation Adviser

Permanent f/t (37.5 hrs pw)
Swindon
Ref: IRC68390

Summary
You are an accredited textile conservator with a passion for, and a
wide-ranging knowledge of, historic textiles - from upholstery and state beds,
tapestries and wall hangings, to costume, embroideries and white work -
blending traditional practice with current innovation and conservation science.
You have significant experience of training and skills development, and an
understanding of the roles which textiles and costume play in bringing historic
house interiors to life. Confident and charismatic, you enjoy sharing your
knowledge and insight with a variety of audiences, both internally through
training programmes and workshops, and externally through lectures and
publications. You are organised and confident in prioritising conservation work
and, with an established network of contacts, you'll have access to the best
practice in Europe to help you advise our historic houses on how to look after
their textile furnishings and collections.
* This role can be based at any of our regional hubs across the UK and will
include substantial travel to our properties. *

What it's like to work here
Our National Consultancy includes specialists in many fields, who represent a
great repository of skills, talent and expertise, sharing resources across
disciplines and boundaries, enabling us to collaborate on complex conservation
projects and ensure a holistic approach to the care of our collections. The
diversity and quality of expertise within the Consultancy enables our
properties to benefit from an extraordinary range of creative and innovative
thinking, which together support our twin purposes of caring for the nation's
heritage, and making it accessible to all. Our vision is to give our visitors
experiences which are emotionally rewarding, intellectually stimulating and
inspire them to support our cause, through creative programming and the dynamic
display of our collections to the highest standards of conservation,
presentation and interpretation.

What you'll be doing
You will join the team of National Specialists in Collections, and be the
Trust's expert on the care and conservation of our textile collections. You
will work closely with our National Specialist furniture curator, freelance
furniture conservation advisers, Textile Conservation Studio manager, and with
staff and freelance textile conservators.
You will maintain and update conservation surveys; prioritise in situ and
studio conservation work; and develop the knowledge of property staff and
consultants by providing conservation advice and training. Remedial
conservation is undertaken by the Textile Conservation Studio and by freelance
conservators, working in situ in properties and in their own studios: you will
specify treatments, identify the need for additional services or expertise,
advise on budgets and competitive tenders, and recommend approved
practitioners, as required. We want you to share your expertise and learning
with our enthusiastic house teams and regional consultants, deepen our
understanding of technical aspects of our collections, support exhibitions,
research new techniques and technologies, and publish and present this work to
national and international audiences, in order to make our work and our
collections more accessible to our visitors, and to conservation and curatorial
scholars.
