Stanford Libraries seeks a full-time paper conservator.

Working within a dynamic conservation laboratory, the paper conservator will be 
responsible for conservation assessment, treatment, and documentation of 
paper-based archival collections, art on paper, and parchment documents. As 
part of a team of nine conservation staff, the paper conservator will 
contribute skills and expertise to prolong the useful life of a wide array of 
paper-based library and archival collections. Stanford Libraries collects, 
processes, and preserves materials to support use by faculty, students, 
scholars, and the general public. Stanford Libraries’ collections number over 
9.5 million volumes in twenty libraries, including the David Rumsey Map Center, 
Special Collections and University Archives.

Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:
1.      Provide conservation treatment for paper-based and/or parchment 
collection materials including but not limited to maps, broadsides, archival 
documents, paper based ephemera, and art on paper. 
2.      Assess the condition of collection materials for potential treatment, 
project development, or suitability for loan or digitization. 
3.      Document conservation treatment through reports, photodocumentation, 
and statistics. Track workflow using departmental tools, software and 
applications.
4.      Utilize analytical equipment in the lab and the greater university when 
appropriate to guide treatment decision making.
5.      Train internal staff including temporary, intern, and project staff in 
paper conservation techniques and participate in training and handling sessions 
for staff throughout the libraries. 
6.      Participate in tours of the department and at other events to share 
information about conservation activities and professional topics.
7.      Liaise with outside vendors to meet specifications, order supplies, and 
insure quality/working condition of materials, tools and equipment in use.
8.      Other general preservation and administrative duties as assigned.
