Associate Objects Conservator, The Walters Art Museum The Walters Art Museum is among America's top 50 art museums. Situated in the historic Mt. Vernon district of Baltimore, the Walters has an internationally renowned collection of over 36,000 objects. It presents major exhibitions annually, has a world-class conservation studio and research program, and is a leader in education. The Walters' Conservation Division consists of painting, objects, books and paper, and technical research conservation initiatives. Working under the direct supervision of the Terry Drayman Weisser Head of Objects Conservation, the individual will be part of a dynamic and collaborative team.
The Associate Objects Conservator will advance the mission of the Walters by working collaboratively with other departments in the Art and Program Division to ideate, develop, and implement exhibitions, installations, programs and other projects. Responsibilities include the following: Preserves and conserves the museum's collections for today and future generations under the guidance of the Terry Drayman Weisser Head of Objects Conservation by: * Participating in preventive conservation, including monitoring, evaluating, and making recommendations for display and storage environments and materials, pest management, re-housing, etc. * Conducting condition surveys of the collections on a regular basis to prioritize needs, and carrying out emergency treatment on works that are actively deteriorating. * Preparing, examining, treating and documenting works in the collections for acquisition, loan and exhibition. * Consults on environmental conditions, mounting, crating and transit for works traveling. * Assisting in writing grant proposals and overseeing grant projects to address priority preservation needs. * Participates in research and technical study to enhance the body of knowledge on works in the collections and to improve methods of preservation. * Works with museum's conservation scientist to carry out technical studies and analyses on works in the collections. * Collaborating on research projects with other members of the Art and Program Divisions. * Contributes to the museum's research symposia and publishing in the Journal of the Walter Art Museum (JWAM) * Trains and Mentors emerging conservators. * Participates in Public Outreach and Access efforts. * Undertakes administrative and management activities as assigned. Requirements: * Master's degree required; minimum of 5 years post - graduate level. * Must have good grounding in conservation, scientific method, materials science, and environmental science literature. * Comprehensive knowledge of treatment methods, materials, preventative conservation principles and methodology. * Knowledge of art history/archaeology or other subjects relevant to specialty. * Knowledge of ethical and practical professional standards: familiarity with analytical techniques, uses and limitations. * Excellent conservation planning, decision-making, and hand skills for structural and aesthetic treatment. * Strong research, documentation (writing & imaging), teaching, grant writing and communication skills. * Previous supervisory, mentoring, and evaluation skills are required. * Must be detail oriented and skilled in Microsoft Office applications.
