Cambridge University Library (CUL) is currently seeking two Book and Paper Conservators to work on The Polonsky Foundation Greek Manuscripts Project: a Collaboration between the Universities of Cambridge and Heidelberg. This two-year project will conserve, digitise and catalogue all the medieval and early modern Greek manuscripts held in Cambridge along with the Greek manuscripts of the Biblioteca Palatina collection which is split between Heidelberg University Library and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. The approximately four hundred manuscripts written in Greek in Cambridge are spread across the University Library, the Fitzwilliam Museum and twelve Cambridge colleges. They encompass the full chronological range of Greek manuscript culture, stretching from the early Christian period to the early modern and ranging widely across liturgy, history, law, science, medicine, theology and philosophy. These roles will be based at Cambridge University Library but will also involve working with other collections across Cambridge. Conservation work on the collections to support digitisation will include assessment of manuscripts, treatment to stabilise at-risk items prior to photography, and provision of handling support and guidance to CUL's Digital Content Unit. There will also be opportunities to propose and carry out more in-depth treatments on manuscripts identified in the assessment process as in need of repair and stabilisation. Knowledge of book structures and book conservation is essential. Experience of working on large-scale conservation projects, especially in the context of digitisation, is highly desirable, as is a good understanding of Greek-style binding.
