The Master programme in Conservation Studies provides an introduction to the broader field of conservation and restoration of cultural heritage providing skills that enable the graduate to effectively communicate with professionals in the field and develop skills in the application of relevant scientific research, notably with regard to his/her chosen field of specialisation. Once the Master's diploma has been obtained, graduates apply for the two-year Post-Master's training phase for which a stipend is provided. On completion of the post-Master training graduates are in a position to work independently as conservation-restoration professionals. A Dutch-language minor course is offered at the University of Amsterdam which fulfils the part of the selection relating to preventive conservation, art history and organic chemistry. Students who have not followed this course have to prove knowledge of these subjects either by having completed another conservation course or through self-study of literature which they receive on application. The selection process for all candidates combines interviews, portfolio reviews and a demonstration of skills deemed necessary to enrol in the study.
